What's Happening Captain

We've been in school for almost two months and so much has been going on. Our children have learned what the expectation of the classroom is and how they are expected to behave. We are now becoming a family that works together and can count on each other.
During reader's workshop, we have learned many strategies that will help us to become better readers and understand text better. For example, making connections and creating mental images. In writer's workshop, we are working on creating personal narratives, stories about us. We've learned that stories have to have a sequence and flow. Our focus this month is building setting in our stories using our 5 senses. The children are doing a great job visualizing what is around them at the point of time where their stories are taking place. In Math, we are building on our number sense from addition and subtraction up to sums of 20 to creating number stories and following patterns. During Science, we are working on our module of The Life Cycle of the Butterfly. Our children watch them go through all the stages of their lives and enjoyed taking care of them. Make sure you ask them to tell you what they know about caterpillars and butterflies. Be on the look out for future blogs.

About Me

I am a graduate of Grambling State University and have been teaching 2nd grade in Newark NJ for 7 years. My philosophy of learning is that "All Children Can Learn." We must look at each and every child individually and cater to their strengths and various learning styles. Over time, they will master the skills necessary to be successful in the world we live in.
